Charice, Voice of a New Generation

Last night industry insiders and a few select fans gathered in SoHo’s Canal Room for a private showcase featuring 17-year-old Filipino newcomer Charice. If her name sounds familiar, you may be one of the millions who watched her numerous performances on Oprah since 2008. Industry heavyweights like David Foster have been behind her since the start of her journey and for good reason – the girl can sing!

Charice‘s set included a mix of her own songs and a few Celine Dion covers. Standing in front of the stage, I was in awe of how strong her vocals are now. I can only imagine how much stronger they will get as she gets older.

From beginning to end, Charice worked the crowd, did a little choreography, and sang with more passion than most singers in her age group. Her band was equally amazing, and I must say the drummer made some faces that could rival John Mayer’s.

Charice is getting ready to release her self-titled debut album on May 11. Check out the first single Pyramid featuring Iyaz below.

Meet Shari Baldie, GRAE New York's Resident Girl About Town. In 2009 Shari created GRAE New York out of spring break boredom. Finding inspiration in everything from music and style to art and culture, GRAE New York is a digital magazine of her lifestyle and influences. When she’s not writing or being a girl about town, Shari spends her time (unsuccessfully) convincing native New Yorkers that her Westchester hometown is not “upstate." It’s an ongoing battle.
